The Future of Knee Arthroplasty: Beyond the Saw?

Pushing the boundaries in orthopedics

Don't miss this PCO webinar, on Monday November 17 2026 - 17:30 UTC

Registration is free!

Robotic-assisted knee arthroplasty has transformed the way surgeons plan and execute knee replacement. But is today's robotics only the beginning?

In this PCO webinar, international experts will explore some of the technologies that could define the next generation of knee arthroplasty: understanding the influence of posterior femoral osteophytes on knee balance, moving towards fast and contactless surface registration, and exploring whether laser technology could ultimately transform bone preparation itself.

Rather than focusing on a single robotic platform, the objective will be to discuss how sensing, registration, soft-tissue balance and new bone-shaping technologies could converge to make knee arthroplasty more precise, reproducible and personalised.

Why should you watch this webinar?

At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Understand how posterior femoral osteophytes can influence knee balance and potentially affect intraoperative decision-making in robotic TKA.
  • Discover the principles and potential advantages of contactless laser/optical surface registration compared with conventional registration techniques.
  • Understand how laser bone shaping could challenge conventional saw-based bone preparation and potentially enable new approaches to implant design and fixation.
  • Explore what the next generation of robotic knee arthroplasty could look like, combining real-time sensing, intelligent registration, balancing and highly precise bone preparation.

My website

I am an orthopedic surgeon specialized in knee surgery. I practice at the University Hospital of Toulouse in the University Sports Clinic located in the Pierre Paul Riquet Hospital.
In addition to teaching at the Faculty of Medicine, I participate in courses for the professional societies to which I belong such as the SFA, ESSKA and SOFCOT.
My clinical activity (more than 800 surgeries per year) is exclusively focused on knee surgery. An important part of my surgeries is related to sports traumatology, in particular anterior cruciate ligament injuries (350+ ACL reconstructions per year).
My research activity is also focused on the knee. I have contributed to more than 110 publications in international journals. I am developing an à la carte approach in order to propose a personalized surgery to the patient. In the context of degenerative activity, the aim is to better analyze the variability of the anatomy in order to be able to propose prostheses adapted to the patient's anatomy. In the context of sports traumatology, it is a question of improving the dismemberment of all the lesions in order to propose an adequate therapy.
Since May 2022, I am a member of the board of ESSKA (European Society of Sports Traumatology Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy) as treasurer.

"I graduated summa cum laude from both my Bachelor of Science degree and master’s degree in biomedical engineering programs at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, where I later graduated as valedictorian of my medical class.

After an orthopedic surgery residency here at the Hospital for Joint Diseases—now NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital—I completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction and total joint replacement surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

My practice at NYU Langone focuses specifically on caring for people with hip and knee conditions. I have a particular interest in degenerative joint disease of the hips and knees. Other areas of focus include treatment for people with developmental hip dysplasia, avascular necrosis, posttraumatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and complex revision surgery.

I have had the privilege to train and learn from the founders of the field of joint replacement surgery. I have gained a vast amount of experience in performing complex and revision hip and knee surgery, partial knee replacement, ligament-sparing knee surgery, hip resurfacing, and hip fracture surgery. I helped develop and use robotics and advanced technology for hip and knee replacement. I pioneered minimally invasive surgical techniques such as the STAR approach for hip and robotic knee replacements. My goal is to help my patients maintain their lifestyle and activity levels.

Dr Schwarzkopf is the director of the Research Center for the Adult Reconstruction Division. Dr. Schwarzkopf’s research interests include both clinical and basic science. He has published over 800 peer reviewed studies on topics ranging from hip fracture fixation to outcomes of total joint replacements. Dr. Schwarzkopf has received multiple grants throughout his career including the TriOrg, FARE, OREF and knee and hip society research grants. Dr. Schwarzkopf is a member of both the prestigious North American Hip Society and Knee Society; he serves on the board of the hip society and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons."

Dr Schwarzkopf is married to Aude, and father to Matan, Yaelle and Mia. His hobbies include running, snowboarding, Scuba diving and skydiving.
